Whether you are starting with a brand new spa or moving from a chlorine-based spa, it is essential to understand the need to have your spa’s water chemistry in balance before starting your new Mini.
Existing spas may have preexisting contaminants in the water. Even when starting with fresh water there are contaminants in the water.
It is recommended to shock the water with some chlorine-based shock with stabilizer when first starting your Mini. Shocking will give you two benefits to your startup. First, it will kill all the contaminants in the water allowing you to begin building free chlorine residual. And second, it will leave a residual of free chlorine. There may also be some other problems with your water chemistry such as your pH or alkalinity may be off balance causing your chlorine to oxidize off too quickly.
It is imperative that before the Mini begins in the spa, that the chemicals in the water are balanced which includes free chlorine residual. You want your free chlorine (residual) at 2-4 ppm. The free chlorine ensures that the Mini is not trying to “repair” the water’s condition upon start-up.
Other times shock treatments would be beneficial:
o After a party or other period of heavy use.
o A neglected spa.
o When restarting a spa with fresh water.
