Salt level/PPM in pool

We bought a Saltron Retro a couple months ago, seems to be doing great. According to the chart in the included booklet I should get my pool to 3000PPM. I've put in about 20 bags of 40lbs salt and I'm around 1000PPM, but the Saltron display says the levels are normal, and the pool feels/tastes very salty. So it doesn't seem like I should add more but yet using a strip indicator to test my salt PPM levels doesn't match to what the recommend level.

Just curious if anyone has some insight on this issue or had a similar issue and if anyone has any suggestions.
